People consume marketing passively, without any active effort or participation, throwing items into their carts and checking out without even realizing the strategic steps put in place. They may notice the aesthetics, but completely miss the intention. For me, I experience brands through the sensory, emotional, and cognitive touchpoints that ultimately shape our perceptions as consumers. After years of studying marketing, I have trained myself to notice alignment, details, and strategic intentions so much so that I can’t “turn off” this lens. I believe marketing is never accidental, it’s just up to the consumer if they choose to see it.

The difference between good marketing and great marketing is almost always in the details. I’ve found that the big campaign idea isn’t what’s being missed by consumers, it’s the structure behind it. From the spacing on a website, wording on the call-to-action button, color scheme across platforms, or even the tone shift between social media captions and an email copy, everything slowly shapes perception. In my opinion, consistency is one of the most underrated competitive advantages in business since these small details are uniquely strategic and often overlooked. I’ve come to believe that the smallest details shape the biggest outcomes. It’s through these small details where a consumers’ perception is formed. Perception builds trust. Trust builds loyalty. And loyalty ultimately builds revenue. I believe inconsistency is much more expensive than companies realize, weakening even the strongest ideas.

Becoming a more mindful consumer doesn’t require a marketing degree, it requires intention and attention to the small details. The next time you see an advertisement, endcap display, new product packaging, or even subtle social media posts, try looking a little closer.

Put the Marketing Lens to Work:

1. Pay Attention to Repetition

Does the brand have repeated phrases, colors, taglines, or visions across multiple platforms? Repetition builds familiarity within the customer, which then results in trust. When brands use repetition effectively, they are training your brain to associate them with something positive, pushing you to be a repeat customer.

2. Analyze the Tone Across Platforms

Is their brand voice consistent across all platforms? Inconsistency in tone across platforms creates friction that consumers feel even if they may not notice it. Alignment across platforms is a signal for professionalism and stability within a brand.

3. Notice the Call-to-Action Language

What are brands trying to get you to do? Call-to-action wording reveals a brand’s positioning strategy and plays a big role in a consumer’s emotional journey. Language that is urgent, creates pressure, language that is invitational builds belonging. These words are strategic, and can even reflect how a brand wants to be perceived by a consumer.

4. Identify the Emotion Being Triggered

What feelings does an advertisement get you to feel? The relationship between a brand and a consumer is emotional. People make decisions based on emotions and justify them logically. Marketing isn’t just selling you a product or service, it sells identity and an emotional connection.

5. Look for Alignment Between Promise and Experience

Do a brand’s actions align with what they claim to promise? An inconsistency between messaging and execution weakens credibility. Without alignment, marketing fails to do its job in building trust.

Now that you’re starting to think like a marketer, you’ll start to notice these details in every corner of your life. What once was something that felt random and went unnoticed will now begin to look like intentional strategies. Brands that standout aren’t just lucky, they are aligned, strategic, and intentional. Next time you click, buy, or scroll past something, I challenge you to ask yourself what it’s trying to make you feel, then let me know what you noticed!

What is one marketing detail you’ve noticed recently that changed your perception of a brand?
